Two standing x-rays are taken looking directly at both knees, one with flexion and another without flexion.
These must be taken standing as this ensures the knees are bearing weight and accurately showing how much joint space is present when the knees are in use.
Kneecap views:
Used to evaluate the joint space in the kneecap compartment.
If both knees are experiencing symptoms, then a bilateral kneecap view is needed to capture both kneecap compartments.
Lateral views:
This is a supplementary view that is only obtained for joints that are symptomatic and is not used to evaluate joint space narrowing.
Hip X-rays
AP Pelvis
One x-ray is taken of the pelvis area. This view is required for any hip evaluation.
Lateral views:
A lateral or side view is needed for each symptomatic hip.
